BREAKING: Iconic Comedian’s Tragic Death Shatters Entertainment World

Ruth Buzzi, the Emmy-nominated comedian and actress best known for her iconic role as Gladys Ormphby on Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In, passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 1, 2025, at her home in Stephenville, Texas.

She was 88 years old and had been in hospice care for several years following a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

A Trailblazer in Comedy

Born on July 24, 1936, in Westerly, Rhode Island, Buzzi began her entertainment career in musical and comedy revues at the age of 19.

She honed her craft at the Pasadena Playhouse, studying alongside future stars like Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman. Her early television appearances included The Garry Moore Show, The Steve Allen Comedy Hour, and The Carol Burnett Show.

Buzzi’s breakthrough came in 1968 when she joined the cast of NBC’s Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In. She became the only performer to appear in every episode during the show’s six-season run. Her portrayal of Gladys Ormphby, the scowling spinster with a lethal handbag, became a cultural touchstone and earned her a Golden Globe Award in 1973, along with five Primetime Emmy nominations throughout her career.

A Versatile Performer

Beyond Laugh-In, Buzzi showcased her versatility across various platforms. She appeared in films such as Freaky Friday (1976) and The North Avenue Irregulars (1979), and lent her voice to beloved animated series including The Smurfs, The Berenstain Bears, and The Rescuers. Buzzi also made significant contributions to children’s television, featuring in 86 episodes of Sesame Street and voicing characters like Suzie Kabloozie.

Her final acting role was in the 2021 film One Month Out. Even after retiring from performing, Buzzi remained connected with her fans through social media, sharing humor and updates about her life.

Remembering Ruth Buzzi

Tributes have poured in from colleagues and fans alike. Goldie Hawn, her Laugh-In co-star, expressed her sorrow on Instagram, writing, “You made me laugh like no one else could. You were beyond talented, Ruthie. A one-of-a-kind soul who brought so much laughter and light to the world.”

Buzzi is survived by her husband of over 40 years, Kent Perkins. The couple did not have children. In lieu of flowers, her family has requested donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in her memory.

Ruth Buzzi’s legacy as a pioneering woman in comedy and a cherished entertainer endures, leaving an indelible mark on generations of audiences.
