117-Year-Old Woman’s DNA and Diet Hold Secrets to Long Life, Scientists Reveal

A 117-year-old woman has stunned scientists with her extraordinary longevity, and researchers believe her DNA and daily habits could hold the key to a longer, healthier life.

The woman, whose identity is being kept private at her family’s request, lived independently until well into her 110s and remained mentally sharp with no major chronic illnesses.

Scientists who studied her lifestyle and genetic makeup say she may offer critical insights into how humans can live longer while maintaining good health.

The DNA Difference

Geneticists discovered that the woman carried several rare genetic variants linked to reduced inflammation, efficient cell repair, and a slower aging process. These genes appear to help her body fight off age-related damage that typically leads to conditions like heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and cancer.

“What we found in her DNA was truly remarkable,” said Dr. Elena Rossi, a longevity researcher. “It’s like her body was naturally programmed to age more slowly.”

A Surprisingly Simple Diet

Even more intriguing was her diet: simple, consistent, and mostly plant-based. She ate small portions, avoided processed foods, and favored vegetables, legumes, olive oil, whole grains, and the occasional glass of red wine. Her favorite meal? Steamed greens with a splash of lemon and garlic.

She also practiced intermittent fasting without even realizing it—often eating only two meals a day, a habit she said came from growing up in a time of food scarcity.

The Power of Positivity and Routine

Beyond biology and food, researchers noted her upbeat attitude, strong social ties, and daily routine played a role. She walked regularly, stayed mentally active, and kept close contact with family and friends.

“She laughed every day,” said her great-granddaughter. “She said stress was the biggest killer of all—and she just didn’t let things bother her.”

What It Means for the Rest of Us

While not everyone carries her rare genes, scientists say we can still learn from her habits. A healthy, balanced diet, regular physical activity, meaningful relationships, and stress management can all increase our chances of a longer life.

Her story is now the focus of an ongoing international longevity study, as researchers aim to unlock the secrets of supercentenarians and apply them to public health strategies around the world.

As for her secret, the 117-year-old summed it up simply before her passing:
“Eat real food, love your people, and don’t take life too seriously.”
