A Man Lived in a Sewer for 22 Years — When People Saw What Was Inside, They Could Hardly Believe Their Eyes

Imagine walking down an ordinary street, passing cars, shops, and pedestrians, without realizing that someone has made a home just beneath your feet.

In Medellín, Colombia, that was exactly how Miguel Restrepo lived for more than two decades.

While most people dreamed of owning a beautiful house, Miguel had transformed an abandoned underground drainage space into a surprisingly organized home.

And he wasn’t living there alone.

His partner, María García, and their beloved dog, Blackie, shared the tiny underground shelter.

When journalists finally photographed the unusual home in December 2012, the images attracted international attention.

But the most surprising part wasn’t simply where they lived.

It was how they had managed to make such an unlikely place feel like home.

How Miguel Ended Up Living Underground

Miguel’s life had not been easy.

Originally from Amagá, Colombia, he moved to Medellín when he was young.

Like many people searching for a better future, he hoped the city would offer opportunities.

Instead, he experienced poverty, homelessness, and problems with drug addiction.

Without a stable home or enough money to rent a room, he spent time living on the streets.

Eventually, he discovered an unused underground space beneath the city.

It was dark, cramped, and far from comfortable.

But it offered something he desperately needed: shelter.

Miguel decided to stay.

What began as a temporary solution gradually became his permanent home.

Over the years, he improved the space using whatever materials and resources he could find.

And eventually, María joined him.

A Home Smaller Than Most Bathrooms

From the street, their home looked like an ordinary manhole.

A circular opening in the concrete led into the darkness below.

But beneath that opening was a tiny living space measuring approximately 6 square meters, or about 65 square feet.

The ceiling was only around 1.4 meters high.

That meant neither Miguel nor María could stand upright inside.

Yet somehow, they had managed to fit many of the things people normally associate with a home.

There was a bed.

A small cooking area.

A television.

A fan.

And even electrical lighting.

Every available inch had a purpose.

The couple kept their belongings organized and tried to make the space as comfortable as possible.

For outsiders, the arrangement seemed almost impossible.

For Miguel and María, it was simply everyday life.

Their Little Dog Made the Home Complete

One of the most touching details was the couple’s relationship with their dog, Blackie.

The animal lived with them underground and became an important part of their small family.

Photographs showed Miguel helping Blackie climb out through the opening and spending time with him inside the shelter.

The couple also decorated the area around their entrance.

During the Christmas season, they placed festive decorations outside.

They even maintained a small garden nearby.

These details surprised many people who saw the photographs.

The couple had almost no material possessions, yet they still found ways to make their surroundings personal.

Their underground home was unconventional, but it reflected the life they had built together.

The Biggest Problem Was Something They Couldn’t Control

Despite the improvements, living underground came with serious difficulties.

The biggest danger was rain.

When heavy storms hit Medellín, water could seep into the shelter.

The small space was also vulnerable to dampness and poor ventilation.

Miguel attempted to reduce flooding by making changes around the entrance.

But there was no way to eliminate the risks entirely.

Their living conditions were far from ideal.

They had limited space, few resources, and little protection from severe weather.

Miguel earned money through occasional work, including watching parked cars.

The couple also depended at times on help from people in the surrounding community.

Still, they had grown attached to their unusual home.

“I’m Happier Than the President”

When reporters interviewed Miguel in 2012, his attitude surprised them.

Instead of expressing anger about his living conditions, he spoke about the peace he felt.

He even joked that he was happier than Colombia’s president because he didn’t have the same worries.

For Miguel, happiness wasn’t necessarily about owning a large house or expensive possessions.

It was about having a place he considered his own.

It was about companionship.

And it was about the relative stability he had found after years of hardship.

Later reports described the couple as reluctant to leave their underground shelter, even when alternative accommodation was discussed.

Their attachment was difficult for outsiders to understand.

But to Miguel and María, the place represented years of shared experiences.

Why Their Story Captured the World’s Attention

When photographs of the couple appeared in international media, people reacted with disbelief.

Some were amazed by their ability to organize such a tiny space.

Others were moved by their affection for one another.

And many were troubled that anyone had to live in such difficult conditions.

The photographs showed Miguel looking through the circular entrance, María sitting inside their shelter, and Blackie resting nearby.

They also revealed the television, bed, fan, and small cooking area that made the space functional.

The images demonstrated extraordinary resourcefulness.

But they also highlighted the reality of homelessness and poverty.

Their story was not proof that living in a sewer is safe or desirable.

It was a reminder that people facing difficult circumstances sometimes create a sense of home in places others would never imagine.

A Different Meaning of Home

For many people, home means a comfortable building, spacious rooms, and modern conveniences.

For Miguel and María, it meant something very different.

Their shelter was cramped.

Rain could enter.

And their possessions were few.

But it was also the place where they shared meals, cared for their dog, and spent years together.

The story became famous because it challenged people’s expectations.

A manhole that most pedestrians would never notice concealed an entire domestic life.

And behind the unusual photographs were two people trying to find stability in difficult circumstances.

Miguel Restrepo’s story reminds us that a home is more than its walls, although everyone deserves somewhere safe and healthy to live.

The photographs from 2012 continue to fascinate people because they reveal something unexpected beneath an ordinary city street.

And perhaps the most remarkable part is not how little the couple owned, but how much meaning they had attached to the place they called home.
