His shovel hit something solid

One sunny afternoon, Mark was digging up his garden, preparing to plant a row of flowers, when his shovel hit something solid. He leaned down and, brushing away the dirt, uncovered an old necklace. The chain was tarnished, but the pendant—a deep pink stone set in an ornate gold frame—was mesmerizing, even under layers of grime.

Curious about its origins, Mark decided to take the necklace to a local jeweler to see if it had any value. The jeweler, Mr. Bernstein, had been in the business for over fifty years, known in town as the man who could identify any antique piece. When Mark handed him the necklace, Mr. Bernstein’s expression shifted from polite curiosity to utter shock.

He held the necklace up to the light, examining the blue stone and the delicate gold filigree with a loupe, his hands trembling. “This… this can’t be true,” he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper.

Mark raised an eyebrow, puzzled. “What do you mean?”

Mr. Bernstein put down the loupe and looked at Mark, his face pale. “Do you know what this is?” he asked, his voice trembling slightly. Mark shook his head, curiosity and unease growing.

“This is no ordinary necklace,” Mr. Bernstein continued. “This is the Blue Flame, a piece that was believed to have been lost over a century ago. It was owned by the royal family of a small European kingdom and is said to be cursed.”

“Cursed?” Mark echoed, half-skeptical but intrigued.

The jeweler nodded gravely. “Legend has it that the Blue Flame was made by a royal alchemist who poured a part of his soul into the stone. It was meant to protect the royal family, but after the alchemist’s death, the jewel started to bring misfortune to anyone who possessed it. The last known owner, a young duchess, disappeared under mysterious circumstances, and her family, fearing the curse, had the necklace hidden away—never to be seen again.”

Mark stared at the necklace, feeling a chill run down his spine. “But how did it end up in my garden?”

Mr. Bernstein shook his head, just as bewildered. “That, I cannot say. But the fact that you found it after all these years…”

The jeweler paused, and his gaze turned serious. “Mark, if I were you, I would be careful with this piece. Many believe the curse is real. People who have come into possession of the Blue Flame have reported strange occurrences—visions, voices, even nightmares.”

Despite his initial skepticism, Mark couldn’t shake the feeling of unease as he took the necklace back home. That night, strange things began to happen. As he lay in bed, he thought he heard faint whispers, though he couldn’t understand what they were saying. Shadows seemed to dance in the corners of his room, and he felt a constant chill, even though the windows were shut tight.

Over the following days, he started having vivid dreams—of a woman in a royal blue gown, wandering through dark hallways, calling out for help. Her face, though beautiful, was filled with sadness, and every night she seemed to come closer, her voice growing louder.

Unable to bear it any longer, Mark returned to Mr. Bernstein and told him everything. The jeweler nodded solemnly. “It’s said that the only way to lift the curse is to return the necklace to its rightful place—wherever that may be. You must let the duchess rest.”

Determined to end the haunting, Mark delved into research, uncovering a nearly forgotten legend that the last owner of the necklace, the duchess, had disappeared in an ancient mansion just outside the city—a place that had long been abandoned.

Armed with nothing but the necklace and a sense of resolve, Mark made his way to the mansion. The air was thick with silence as he walked through the dusty halls, guided by an inexplicable pull toward a small, hidden room. Inside, he found a decrepit portrait of the duchess, her sad eyes the same ones that had haunted his dreams.

Taking a deep breath, Mark placed the necklace on a small table beneath the portrait. For a moment, nothing happened. Then, a gust of cold air swept through the room, and he felt a strange warmth in his chest, as if a weight had lifted. The shadows seemed to recede, and a peaceful stillness settled over the mansion.

The whispers ceased, the visions faded, and Mark knew, somehow, that he had set the duchess free. He left the mansion, feeling as if he had returned something precious to its rightful place. And from that day forward, his life returned to normal—though he would never forget the haunting beauty of the Blue Flame or the mysterious journey it had led him on.
