Rowan Hale almost didn’t answer the call.

Unknown number. Middle of a meeting. Easy to ignore.

But he picked up.

“Hello?”

Static.

Then a small, trembling voice—

“Dad?”

Rowan was on his feet instantly. “Micah? What’s wrong?”

“Dad… Elsie won’t wake up properly. She’s really hot… and Mom isn’t here. We don’t have anything left to eat.”

Everything else disappeared.

Rowan ran.

Out of the office. Into his car. Calling his wife, Lena, again and again.

No answer.

By the time he reached the house, his hands were shaking.

The silence hit him first.

Wrong.

Heavy.

He pushed the door open.

“Micah?”

The boy sat on the floor, holding a pillow, too quiet for a child his age.

“I thought you weren’t coming,” he whispered.

“I’m here,” Rowan said, dropping beside him. “Where’s your sister?”

Micah pointed.

Elsie lay on the couch, pale, burning with fever.

Rowan touched her forehead—

Too hot.

“We’re going to the hospital,” he said, steady but urgent.

As he carried her out, his eyes caught the kitchen.

Empty.

No food. No signs of care.

Nothing.

In the car, Micah’s voice came from the back seat.

“Is Mom mad?”

Rowan swallowed hard. “No. I’ve got you.”

Then—

“Where is she?”

That question stayed unanswered all the way to the hospital.

Until Rowan’s phone rang again.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A man’s voice.

Calm. Controlled.

“If you want to understand where your wife is… you need to come alone.”

Rowan’s grip tightened on the wheel.

“Who is this?”

There was a pause.

Then—

“Someone who knows why your children were left alone.”

Rowan didn’t answer right away.

He pulled into the hospital entrance, barely stopping before rushing out with Elsie in his arms.

“Help!” he shouted.

Everything moved fast after that—nurses, a stretcher, questions he answered without thinking. Micah stayed close, gripping his jacket.

“Stay here,” Rowan told him gently. “I’m not going anywhere.”

But his phone was still in his hand.

Still connected.

“I’m listening,” Rowan said quietly as he stepped into the hallway.

The man’s voice remained calm. “Your wife didn’t disappear. She made a choice.”

Rowan’s chest tightened. “What kind of choice leaves her kids starving?”

“A desperate one.”

Silence stretched.

“Check your email,” the man added. “Then decide if you still want to find her.”

The call ended.

Rowan stood there, heart pounding, and opened his inbox.

One new message.

No subject.

Just a file.

He opened it.

Documents.

Bank transfers. Large amounts. His name… linked to accounts he had never seen before.

Then a second file.

Photos.

Lena. Sitting across from a man Rowan didn’t recognize.

And a date.

Three days ago.

Before she vanished.

His stomach dropped.

Micah’s voice cut through everything. “Dad… is she going to be okay?”

Rowan looked up, forcing himself back into the present.

“I’m here,” he said.

And for the first time—

He understood.

This wasn’t just about a missing wife.

Or even abandoned children.

This was something bigger.

Something planned.
